What to expect
What is therapy?
The aim of therapy is to manage negative emotions and increase resilience. This is achieved by a skilled therapist helping the client clearly link thoughts, emotions and behaviour together. The therapist then uses these links to develop well-tested strategies that focus on resilience, independence and change. This is done in a safe and confidential space.
What happens in an assessment session?
This is the first session. You will meet with one psychologist for the assessment and they may spend some time with you to discuss the below. Where support is for a child we may meet with the child and parent individually or both the child and parent to discuss the below:
We can also provide a written summary of our assessment including resources, strategies and recommendations.

What happens in therapy?
- Therapy sessions are often weekly, one-to-one, and last 50 minutes.
- Initial sessions - identifying goals and patterns that might lead you to feel stuck.
- Later sessions - putting strategies into practice and problem solving.
- Final sessions - identifying possible future challenges and helpful strategies.
- Follow-up - two follow-up sessions will be arranged over the course of six months.
- You will not be forced to talk about anything you are uncomfortable with and can tell us if you have a preference about who joins the sessions.
- Another psychologist may also join a session as it often helps clients to have a second perspective.
- Sessions will usually be held at your psychologist's clinic but sometimes be at your home or another location if this is where the problem usually appears.
