Dr Emma Townsend (DClinPsy, MSc, BSc)
Clinical Psychologist
Adult and Child and Mental Health, Autism Spectrum Condition and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, PTSD
Hello, my name is Emma and I am a Clinical Psychologist based in Honor Oak. I have worked in the NHS for over 9 years and completed my Clinical Psychology doctoral training at the University of East Anglia. I have worked in a wide range of settings including adult and older adult community mental health teams (CMHT), child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) and specialist trauma services.
I currently work in the neurodevelopment team in CAMHS for South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. I also work in the Havens Therapies Team, in a specialist team for young people who have experienced sexual violence, for Kings College Hospital Trust.
I offer person-centred assessments and therapy drawing on a range of evidence based psychological interventions. I primarily use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and adapt these creatively to meet the person where they are at.
I have experience working with a wide range of emotional difficulties including:
An area of expertise and passion is working with children with neurodevelopmental disorders including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). I believe every child is worthy and it is often these children that are misunderstood in their environments, leaving them with anxiety and low self-esteem. I often meet parents that have been advocating and fighting for their child for a long time. I can help with this advocacy; to build understanding of what the diagnosis means for the person, and encouraging the systems (such as school) around the person to understand their social, emotional and sensory needs.
My other area of speciality is working with young people and adults who have experienced trauma. I provide a safe space to process these traumatic experiences, and explore how this is continuing to impact the person, working towards helping them to reclaim their lives.
Supporting people to feel their emotions are valid, and that they make sense is important to me. I work collaboratively with people to reach the goals that they have for themselves, in a safe and non-judgemental space.
I am fully registered with the Health Care Professional Council as a Registered Clinical Psychologist: PYL039067
