Dr Kate Fullarton (DClinPsy, MSc, MA)
ChiPP Clinical Psychologist
Adult and Child and Mental Health, Autism Spectrum Condition and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Hello, I am Kate, a Clinical Psychologist based in East Dulwich, South East London. I have worked in NHS mental health services for over seven years and completed my clinical psychology doctoral training at Surrey and Borders NHS trust. I have experience of working with children, adolescents and adults with a range of experiences of distress. The difficulties I work with include, but are not exclusive to: low mood, anxiety, phobias, panic disorder, OCD, emotional regulation, trauma and interpersonal and behavioural difficulties.
An area of specialism I have is working with children, and adolescents with Neuro-diversity, Intellectual Disability (ID), Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). I have experience of working in a CAMHS Neuro-developmental Team for for a number of years. I offer adapted therapies to young people struggling with their mental health, which often impacts their sense of identity, school attendance and relationships. I also have experience working with parents, schools and networks to promote understanding of young people with ASC/ADHD and to recommend changes to support the young person’s sensory, social and emotional needs.
My experience of working with people with a range of difficulties, across diverse service contexts, has provided me with knowledge of a variety of psychological therapies, including Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and Narrative and Systemic models. We are all influenced by the experiences we face in our families, communities and wider society. Therefore I am passionate about providing a space which uses evidenced based treatment models in a creative and flexible way that fits with my clients’ needs, experiences and what they would like to work on in therapy.
Supporting clients to feel that their emotions and responses are valid, and can be made sense of, is key to my practice. Life can be really challenging and our problems often emerge in the context of very difficult experiences. Recognizing when our usual patterns of thinking, behaving and relating are no longer helping us, but are instead leaving us feeling overwhelmed, ashamed, confused, stuck, or alone can be really hard. I create a safe and supportive space, where together we can make sense of your experiences and responses compassionately as I believe this is key to finding ways of creating change.
I am fully registered with the Health Care Professional Council as a Registered Clinical Psychologist: PYL039134
Research
I have worked on a number of research trials investigating how peer led interventions may support recovery in adults who have used crisis services. I also worked on a nationwide service improvement project for crisis teams aiming to support teams to be working in line with a best practice model.
